Help with the summer assignment

So, sometime between the end of May when I last checked it and the end of June, the website listed in your summer assignment decided to move the online help pages.  The new url for the online help pages will be http://www.fordhamprep.org/page.cfm?p=706 .  However, as of today, that page is not working.


Most of the summer assignment is a review, so many of you will know how to do most of it right off the bat.  But, for those of you who would like some help (or reassurance) for your summer assignment, here are some possibilities:


The Khan Academy-  http://www.khanacademy.org/  They have a searchable base of online videos (many of which are short and to the point).  Try searching what you are interested o
in and then read the descriptions of the videos.  Choose a video and watch.  


Graphing-  Read the information given in your packet and use it and what you've been taught in the past to answer the questions.


Error-  Many of you probably haven't learned much about error in measurements.  This is the section of the summer assignment that is probably new material for most of you. Read the information given in your packet and use it to answer the questions.

Hello again,


Hope you all are keeping cool and didn't loose power for very long because of that storm.  Mine was only out for 8 hours, so I consider myself lucky!


So I just got word that the school is ordering new books for us.  So please don't purchase the old one listed at the top of the summer assignment.  You'll get your book on the first day of school.  Since you won't have the book to do the Chapter Outline that is due the first day of school, the chapter outline will be due on Thursday of the first week of school.   The remainder of the summer assignment will still be due on the first day of school.

Hello all,


I've just gotten back from San Diego and the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) conference.  I haven't heard from the school yet about the book.   I hope to know something on Monday. You are able to do everything on the summer assignment without the book except outline the first chapters of the book.  Please check back after July 1 to see if you need to buy the book.

A heat engine has an efficiency of 25% and extracts 120 J of heat from a hot reservoir per cycle. a) How much net work does it perform in each cycle? b)  How much heat does it exhaust in each cycle?

Happy May Day


Objective: SWBAT understand the relationship between density, volume, mass and the buoyant force.


Warm Up:  An aluminum object has a mass of 27.0 kg and a de4nsity of 2.70 x 10^3 kg/cubic m.  The object is attached to a string and immersed in a tank of water.  Determine the a) volume of the object and b) the tension in the string when it is completely immersed.

Bring some paper, a pencil, an equation sheet and a calculator.


Log on to this blog.  Go to http://apphysicsb.homestead.com/review.html .
Choose a subject within Newtonian Mechanics and click on it.  In the window pane on the left (in black) choose "Practice Questions".  Complete the quiz and email me the results (heyesd@calvertnet.k12.md.us).


Choose another subject within Newtonian Mechanics and repeat the process.  If time permits, take a third quiz (which will count as extra credit towards this assignment).

Objective:  SWBAT determine how well they performed on the FRQ section of an AP Physics B Exam.


Warm Up:  Get out your 2009 AP FRQ's.
A 2.0 kg wooden block is on a level board and held against a spring for force constant 100 N/m which has been compresses 0.10 m.  The block is released and propelled horizontally across the board.  The coefficient of friction between the block and the board is 0.20.  Determine the velocity of the block just as it leaves the spring.  Also, determine the distance the block travels after it leaves the spring.
